Major Hospital's story began in the late 1800s when William S. Major built a mansion for his wife that was a replica of his wife's childhood home. Upon his death, the mansion was donated to the City of Shelbyville in 1922 to be used as a county hospital. From 1922 to 1976 the mansion underwent numerous changes and additions to make it a full-service hospital. In 1976 a decision was made to build a new hospital behind the mansion; upon completion of the new hospital in 1981 the Major home was torn down. The west wing of the original hospital was the only portion that remained with the new hospital. From that point on, the hospital has grown with the addition of the Rampart Professional Center (which includes Major Family Medicine, Major Pediatrics, Priority Care, Major Foot & Ankle, and Major Home Care in addition to lab and radiology services). Other nearby MHP departments include MedWorks, Patient Financial Services, and the Sleep Center. The beautiful and growing Intelliplex campus houses Major Internal Medicine, Benesse Oncology, Major OB/GYN, UnaVie Cardiology Center, and our newest location, ReNovo, which houses SportWorks, FORCE, and Major Sports Medicine.

In 2008 the Major Health Partners branding was launched. While the primary hospital facilities remain key to providing outstanding healthcare services to the Shelby County region, the new name introduces the concdept that the services provided extend far beyond the walls of Major Hospital, and are in fact a partnership of the varied healthcare services we offer across our entire enterprise.
